Ancora una medaglia d’argento per lo sciabolatore foggiano Luigi Samele, che dopo il secondo posto di sabato scorso nell’individuale fa il bis nella prova a squadre raggiungendo così il suo terzo podio olimpico: agli allori di Tokyo va infatti aggiunto anche il bronzo a squadre di Londra 2012.

Purtroppo l’apporto al team azzurro da parte del 34enne schermidore pugliese è stato limitato da un problema fisico: Samele è infatti sceso in pedana nel vittorioso quarto di finale contro l’Iran, deciso all’ultima stoccata, poi dopo il primo assalto della semifinale con l’Ungheria, al cospetto del tre volte campione olimpico Aron Szilagyi, lo sciabolatore delle Fiamme Gialle è stato costretto ad alzare bandiera bianca a causa di una sospetta lesione del muscolo medio gluteo sinistro, venendo sostituito dal veterano Aldo Montano il quale – alla sua quinta Olimpiade – è stato tra i grandi protagonisti della rimonta vincente contro i magiari, regolati per 45-43.

Nulla da fare però nella finale contro la fortissima Corea del Sud, vittoriosa per 45-26. Resta comunque una grande prestazione di squadra in cui ciascuno dei membri del quartetto azzurro scelto dal CT Giovanni Sirovich (gli altri due sono stati Enrico Berrè e Luca Curatoli) ha dato un apporto determinante. La medaglia di bronzo è andata all’Ungheria, che ha superato per 45-40 la Germania nella finale per il terzo posto.

Univoco il commento degli Azzurri che a fine gara hanno esaltato la prestazione dell’intero quartetto. In particolare Lugi Samele, rammaricato per l’infortunio che lo ha fermato già nel primo assalto di semifinale, evidenzia il grande spirito di gruppo: “Mi è mancato scendere in pedana, quando sei lì vorresti fare di tutto per combattere fino all’ultima stoccata, ma non ero in grado. Ho cercato di supportare dalla panchina i miei compagni quando le acque si agitavano e tutto questo alla fine ha portato a una bellissima medaglia d’argento. Siamo felici e soddisfatti”.

Il programma olimpico di sciabola si concluderà sabato 31 luglio con la gara a squadre di sciabola femminile con la partecipazione della foggiana Martina Criscio e di Michela Battiston, friulana trapiantata a Foggia per potersi allenare presso il Circolo Schermistico Dauno.
